"Stole It From A Whore House In Creede"

This line from the movie "The Shootist" always had me wanting for years to go to Creede,CO and yesterday I drove the 20 some miles north off the highway to do just that. Here's that line.

This is a bit of what I saw.

The is modern downtown Creede but was originally called "Jimtown" and others but old town Creede was about a mile above here.
Only a few buildings survive.
The original jail is one of them but not for much longer.

I bet it was cold inside of this place.

This ain't much but it's something anyway and the road past old town here continues in a loop for another 16 miles a ride I want to take later.

It was worth driving up here.

  1. I've been to Creede. Didn't stay long, though.

  2. It looks chock full of photo opps. And that's always fun.

  3. I didn't stay long either and it appears to be a bit yuppified. It was chilly and pretty windy and was time to get back home. It seems the whole 160 route from I25 west to Utah is touristville. But there is nobody west of Cortez.

  4. That's cause we left all that prime land to the Hopi and the Navajo

  6. Nice post amigo. Fun place. Reminds me of a day I spent 20 years ago trying to find the ruin of the burned down cafe in Canyon, Colorado because it was the setting for the song, "Navajo Rug". Never found it though.

You did good. Thanks for sharing the experience. Jules

  7. Probably all of them Mont.

But it sure is fun looking isn't it Jules. I figured Creede was going to be something like this and it was.

The point is that now I have the time and will take it to go look at things like this if it seems like it warrants a bit of exploration.

    Thanks men!

  9. I screwed up and didn't go to the cemetery which was close.

Then I read about Bob Ford one of the people the town is noted for and it said he was in business in Walsenburg as well my town address now.
