Mid Evil Times And Pork Stimulus

Yea-we're going to talk some pork here alright.

Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa has requested 1.8mil to study pig odor. Whether this needs to done or not I don't really care as we're not going there.

FYI-if you have never spent much time on the farm or been around large numbers of animals being raised they produce massive amounts of poop. For the most part there's cow shit, chicken shit and pig shit. Trust me on this that pig shit is the worst.

Times have changed with pigs and chickens being raised indoors but not cattle. One quarter of all pigs being raised in the US are in Iowa.

Here is an example of a typical hog confinement center. Some have more buildings than this with at least two being the norm. There are 20 millions hogs being raised in the state at any given time and that does not count all that are used in the breeding program.

In each of these buildings there are roughly 3000 hogs. What you see is steam generated from their body heat as it was pretty cold the day I took this. These facility's are all over the place with more being built all the time. Pig manure is held and later spread on fields for fertilizer. Trust me on this too-any given day if the conditions are right it fucking reeks out there in the cornfield at times enough to make you nauseous. Pig odor is a problem and the little people's concerns are tossed aside in favor of the corporations.

What does this have to do with Mid Evil times your wondering.

With so many of these things and the number of animals involved once again man is sleeping with his livestock.

  1. I don't know why we need to study pig odor, I think we all know it stinks.

If we're gonna study pig poop, why don't we do it to find out how to use it for fuel.

  2. Maybe we should find out why all the sh*t being excemented in our nations capital is completly odorless to those that work there but somehow, is smelled by the rest of the country every morning when we read the news.

  4. This is just another example of politicians labeling a program as pork just because it's something most of us aren't that familiar with and it's a guaranteed laugh line. As One Fly mentioned, factory farms that produce this stuff are a potential health hazard, and they're also a source of unpleasant smells that tend to lower property value. If this is a viable project, which I can't say just from reading that article, then it wounds to me like a worthwhile investment of money.

The only good question is whether there are better ways to spend the money. There might be, but one man's pork is another man's bacon, or something like that.

On a hot day you can smell a Hog farm FIVE MILES AWAY!

Drive by one and you can lose yer lunch.

Pork, the other white meat and I loves bacon but do something about that stench, will ya?!

  6. Never minded pig shit really. I remember it smelling like rotting prunes. But then I always loved cow manure! Large amounts of standing chicken shit was only offending because it was so acidic and stings your eyes!
Studying it you would only come to the obvious conclusion that yhep, Shit Stinks!

  7. Back in the olden days, when such animals were kept in pastures, it didn't seem so bad. Now, when they're kept in buildings or very small lots, the smell is nearly unbearable.

  8. Nor were there the numbers being raised outside. There's also been a many pollution issues.

I got a phone call right at the very end of doing this and lost my train of thought.

I can't get into one of these things. You have to shower before entering and be very sterile going from one building to another.

Some of these are very close to the house and to me this is like times of old when man did sleep with his animals.

  9. OneFly - you are right about pig shit... there a few of these farms in southeastern PA and they sure do stink. It is because of factory farms like the one in this picture that keeps me from buying pork in the supermarket.

BTW - I respond to your question.

  12. I visited family in Nebraska last summer outside of Lincoln. I played a round of golf at their little nine-hole course. When i got back my brother-in-law asked what I thought of the course. I told him that out here they add to the experience -- ODOR.
There was a feed lot on one side of the course and a pig farm on the other. Mix the two and it would gag a maggot.

  13. Pig Shit stinks especially from hog confinements, but this is an Iowa problem, not a national problem. It's something our state legislators should be doing something about, instead of the usual worrying about if somebody might be smoking or taking their clothes of in a drinking establishment! We in Iowa shouldn't have to pay for other states problems like California, and they in turn shouldn't have to pay to figure out how and why our countryside stinks so bad. If we all tended our own nests, everyone would be better off!
