You both are lucky. I flew ultralites for a time. I feel at least you have a shot on those if you have a ballistic chute.
There's a fellow in town who flew all the time a long time friend of a friend. He was a passenger in a small plane that ran out of gas and landed in a palm tree in Florida. Made national news. Has barely got in a plane since.
I had a very close call in one many years ago, en route to Nashville. Never again.

Flying a big one probably made him forget what a little one could not do, like flying in icing conditions.
